Hello dear reader!
For those of you who aren’t my friends and family, my name
is Charlie Haycook and I will be blogging here about my summer experiences! I
started my journey into Student Affairs during my undergrad at the University
of New Hampshire, where I studied Ancient and Medieval History. My original
life plan is a bit out of the ordinary compared to most of my colleagues (I’ll
talk about that in a later post), but I became an RA during my sophomore year and
eventually branched out into Career Services, Student Leadership, and Academic
Advising during Summer Orientation throughout my latter three years. These
experiences influenced me in different ways to pursue Student Affairs as a
career, which meant that I needed to apply to graduate school as quickly as
possible. I was admitted to Salem State University in historic Salem, MA as
well as earning a Graduate Retention Fellowship in the Career Services office. This
summer, however, I am completing an ACUHO-I internship at Bridgewater State
University as the Summer Conference Intern and loving it!
You may be wondering what you can expect from me over the
summer in terms of blog content. I’ll be giving some updates around what I’m
doing at BSU when something exciting happens, but I want to do a lot of
reflection on some adventures that I’ll have this summer and some things that
are important to me. I’ll attempt to answer questions like “How can I create my
own story?”, “What exactly do I tell people about myself when they read my
resume?”, and “Can Dungeons and Dragons teach us lessons about working in
Student Affairs?”. I know that every Student Affairs educator asks that last
one daily, so let’s talk about it!
My goal with this blog is to not only reflect on my
experiences this summer and thus far in life but hopefully spark some
conversations and help you, dear reader, look at life from a different
perspective. If you want to reach out to me, I encourage it! My email address
is cehaycook@yahoo.com or you can
follow me on Twitter @charliethesabre. I don’t tweet much, but you can keep up
with my exploits after this summer there!
Until next time,
Charlie Haycook
