1st SAPro Anniversary

by Olivia Miller

This past week I passed the first month mark in my position at UNL as an academic advisor. It is hard to believe that I have been here already that long, but at the same time I have created a routine both at and outside of work that makes it seems much longer. With my professional headshot now on our website, and my business cards printed and at my desk, it is sinking in that I am really a professional. I have thoroughly enjoyed my first month which has involved a lot of training, as well as individual student meetings during New Student Enrollment (NSE). It has been an exciting, as well as anxiety-inducing time finding my way into this position, and am grateful for everyone’s patience and answers when I need them.

This Saturday I met with a student that quickly became my favorite moment of the job so far. This student is majoring in Political Science and Global studies with hopes of becoming a Foreign Service Officer someday, which is exactly what I majored in and wanted to be as an undergraduate. Working with this student gave me such excitement, and joy that I was reminded that yes, this field is exactly where I am supposed to be and I am so looking forward to the future. After a year of worrying about the job search and my abilities, it is refreshing to feel this sense of peace, and I hope everyone in this field is able to experience this peace as well.

My journey as a SAPro is just beginning, but I cannot wait to see what the future holds!
