For Everything, There Is a Season

by Cassidy Lawson

For a lot of people out there, it is definitely job search season! The HigherEd jobs tab is pulled up on our browser, we’re connecting with colleagues via LinkedIn and Facebook and somehow trying to manage everything else in our day-to-day lives. While some of you are out there, last semester in graduate school looking for your next job, other students are interviewing for graduate school programs!

I have to say one of the most rewarding things about my job is seeing students become so passionate about their student leadership experiences that they want to make it a career! I have a wonderful story about a student I know that I wanted to share. Last year, during my graduate assistantship, I got to meet a beautiful young girl named Sarah (not her real name). She was on the executive board that I co-advised with my supervisor and let me know that she was thinking about student affairs. Once last spring rolled around and interviews for the President of the organization were announced, she thankfully applied and was offered the position. She told me that when she was a nervous, introverted freshmen that she never would have pictured herself becoming President of an organization. This year, she has absolutely excelled in that leadership role and is a terrific role model to all who know her. From there, she began the process of applying to graduate programs.

This past weekend, she started her journey of interviewing for graduate programs. She got interview days to 4 highly competitive programs and is going to 3 of those interview dates. Words cannot express how extremely proud I am of her and how far she has come. I saw her throughout the whole process of thinking about becoming President of her organization, to the application process, to now going on interview days to grad schools! Before this semester started, she wrote me a thank you note that said, “Thank you so much for being a wonderful and impactful mentor this semester.” At the end of the day, that is what makes it all worth it.

Shout out to all those seniors out there interviewing for graduate school programs! It’s a tough process but I know you will do great Hang in there!
