Meet Cassidy!

Hello everyone! My name is Cassidy Lawson and I’m very excited to begin writing for the studentaffairsfirstyears blog! I recently began following this blog and loved how inspirational, thoughtful, and interesting it was to see other people’s Student Affairs journeys. I’m currently serving as a Career and Academic Advisor at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA. Go Dukes! In my role, I advise about 60-70 undeclared first year students, handle walk in appointments related to career topics (resumes, cover letters, job search) and I also serve as the liaison to the College of Health and Human Services to work with faculty on being the point person for the students for Career/Academic Planning needs. I’ve worked in this office previously as a graduate student intern, but I’m excited to begin this role as a full time faculty member in my first professional job!

That being said, I’m looking forward to sharing my thoughts on work, life and play :-) I’m going to give you 25 things you didn’t know about me-because 25 is a decent number to work with and I’m turning 25 on Halloween this year so here we go…

  1. I’m a first generation college student, an only child and come from a single parent family (Just me and my mom-we’re like the Gilmore Girls except no rich grandparents or coffee obsession!)
  2. My mom is a professional photographer, so I definitely grew up with an appreciation for taking pictures (please follow me on Instagram @cassadeejoy)
  3. I don’t currently have any pets at my apartment, but I do have an adorable Japanese Chin dog, Chinny, that I miss very much (If you’ve never heard of the breed, you should Google it cause they’re pretty darn cute).
  4. I’m a Virginia girl born and raised-I may be biased, but I think it’s the best state in the US (I mean come on, we have the gorgeous mountains and a beach).
  5. I’m not a fan of any sports really (I hardly ever watch the Superbowl) so there will be no sports rivalry problems here, since I don’t follow any sports at all! (However, I do enjoy going to college games every now and then).
  6. I graduated from Radford University in Radford, VA with my Bachelor’s of Science in English and Psychology. Even though I swore I would never end up there in high school, I eventually did go there after transferring twice from other schools. It was one of the best decisions I ever made.
  7. I have some housing background-I was an RA for two years at Radford and I was a Hall Director in my first year at JMU. Housing was definitely an experience and it taught me a lot about what it means to be a professional in student affairs…but I think 3 years of housing is enough for me (For my FT Housing staff, so much respect for you!!)
  8. I’m from a very small town in Southwest Virginia (that narrow strip of VA between WV and NC) and I’m a Southern girl at heart. Give me some sweet tea and I’ll be a happy girl J
  9. When I was little, I really wanted to be an actress, then I wanted to be an English teacher, and now I’m thinking if I wasn’t a student affairs professional, I would definitely want to be an interior decorator.
  10. My top three favorite shows that are currently still on air are Game of Thrones, Girls, and The Walking Dead.
  11. I really really enjoy reading books, and especially books that have really good quotes in them. For example, I’m currently reading “Tiny Beautiful Things” by Cheryl Strayed and I’m obsessed.
  12. 12) I recently got a fairly new car-a 2014 Nissan Altima, which was a huge upgrade from my 1999 Dodge Stratus that I’ve driven since high school!
  13. 13) I work in Harrisonburg, VA but I actually live in a small town called, Staunton VA, which is the birthplace of Woodrow Wilson and also home to the American Shakespeare Theatre, the world's only recreation of the original indoor Blackfriars Theatre in London that was demolished in 1655.
  14. I really like to exercise when I can and be out in nature as well. A perfect day for me would to be to go on a long hike and then go floating down the river afterwards.
  15. When it comes to food, I’m kind of picky, but my favorite restaurant is Olive Garden by far (wine and breadsticks…it’s a no brainer!)
  16. I try really really hard to like coffee…but my palette just isn’t there yet. Maybe someday?
  17. I’ve been to Italy before for a weeklong trip to Rome with my mother and would really like to travel internationally again someday.
  18. If I had to choose a store that I had unlimited funds to, it would definitely be Target, Ikea, or Ann Taylor Loft.
  19. 19) I used to take dance lessons when I was younger (ballet, tap, jazz, etc) and I was on my high school dance team for a while. I really have a ton of respect for professional dancers and what there bodies go through!
  20. I’m an INFJ and a True Colors blue…so basically I’m really thoughtful, sensitive, perceptive, and I love people and my relationships!
  21. Last summer, I was an ACUHOI intern for Texas Christian University and I got to visit Austin, TX twice (If you’ve never been before, go visit!!).
  22. My favorite movie of all time is Pride and Prejudice with Keira Knightley…I watch it all the time and it just never gets old.
  23. Even though I’m not a fan of sports, I do have this secret dream of being a mascot for a team (with a full suit and everything)!
  24. I haven’t been to many concerts, but I did see Sam Smith this past January in Fairfax, VA and he blew my mind.
  25. I’m a huge Harry Potter fan and I still haven’t been to Harry Potter World yet…sooo who wants to go to Orlando with me??
So that’s a little bit about me! Do we have anything in common? Want to know more? Please comment below or ask on Twitter @cassidy_lawson –thanks for reading!
