Summer Summer Summertime

by Olivia Barker

I have been listening to nothing but 90s music for the past week, but my good friends DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince have been speaking to my soul tonight! Personally and professionally, this has been a tough year and I am really looking forward to the slower pace that summer brings. Living in the south, there is something beautiful about the summer. Our already slow paced lifestyle slows down even more, the sun shines a little brighter and I swear I can smell the ocean from 40 miles away. Not to mention the tea gets sweeter, the grass gets greener and while I am actually melting somedays, the sunshine nourishes my soul!

With the last two weeks of classes looming, we are all wrapping up events, planning and attending banquets and the students are putting in an extra bit of effort to make sure they end the semester on a high note. It hasn’t slowed down yet, but we all know it’s coming.

This has been an incredible school year. My special events chair and her committee planned 7 incredible events serving almost 6000 students, our cheerleading team won their 4th national title and fundraised thousands of dollars and the student organizations I work with have brought in successful new member classes, started using more resources our office offers and many are already renewed for the next academic year. All we have left is a couple of events and a huge spring concert and we are ready for summer!

My summer will be filled with campus programming, cheer camps, trainings and tons of planning (and tanning) for next year and while our jobs in student affairs never actually stop, I will be enjoying the slower pace that summer allows.
