Single in Student Affairs

By Olivia Barker

I was recently selected to be a speaker at a Women's Empowerment Conference! I'm so honored and excited to be able to outreach to young women about being a strong, working woman with dreams, goals and ambition! I was talking to a colleague about some of the questions I can expect at the conference so I can best prepare. She said most young women will want to know how to balance a career with a family. Welp, I sure hope they don't ask me! Why? I’m almost 28 and I am single...

Living in the south, women my age are typically married with children, but if I would have married one of my college boyfriends  it would not have been a good thing! Instead, I got a master’s degree and moved almost 500 miles away from everything I knew and loved. I unofficially ended a relationship I’d been in and I’ve been single ever since.

After about a year, I decided to “put myself out there” and went on several dates. I was working 60 hours a week and I live in a teensy, tiny town filled with tons of married couples, even more students and the closest big city is 45 miles away making all of those eligible men geographically undesirable. Needless to say, I am still single and you know what? I am okay...actually I am GREAT! I am so happy for all of my friends who are married and who have children! BUT I am just as happy for myself for the choices I have made. One life isn’t better than the other, they are just very different. I still have dreams, goals and ambition, just like my gals who are married, they just might look a little different. Appreciate where you are at and do not stress about the future, ENJOY THE PRESENT!

While I may not be able to tell these women how to balance a career with a family,  I can tell them about balancing a career with dating, building your personal identity, maintaining and building new friendships, your social life and so much more!
