When Your Employer Pays You To Be Fit

By Lindsay Ritenbaugh

I recently signed up for a 10 mile race at Soldier Field in May. While it’s just one week after DemonTHON and the morning after DePaul Activities Board hosts FEST, I decided it was time to take action and push myself toward something tangible in the next few months. I’ll just be extremely exhausted and sore on that Saturday afternoon.

Most people who participate in the Lenten season are giving something up until Easter Sunday. I, on the other hand, am committing (in writing, so I know it’s real) to running 3 times a week. My running inspiration Gabbie reminded me that 3 days is a SMART goal I can stick to without overwhelming myself. Now that there’s a race for which I have to prepare, I’ll have that extra motivation I need.

The best part is that the institution for which I work is going to pay for it, in a way. The race registration fee was $80, but completion of the Healthy Vin-cent$ Campaign through HR will give me $175 off my health care premiums starting in 2015. Every paycheck, I’ll have a credit applied that will eventually cover the cost of the registration (and then some). I am grateful to work for a university that takes care of their employees in regard to physical and mental wellbeing.
