(Wo)man in the Mirror

by Olivia Barker

I have spent a lot of time wondering what my "gift" is... what I was sent to the earth to do. I was just talking to someone this week about being a relationship-based person and the more I learn about myself, the more I believe that is my gift to give the world. Every day I try to make someone smile, I try to make others feel happier or more understood after speaking to me and I try to help others realize their potential. I focus my energy on building relationships with the people around me and while I am already actively exercising my gift, I always have room to grow.

I look to some of the most influential people in the world and hope to be even just a little like them. Martin Luther King, Jr. Mother Teresa, Katherine Hepburn, Mahatma Gandhi all had amazing qualities, but the ones that stand out to me are their compassion and their willingness to listen to and stand up for those around them. My good friend Michael Jackson once said, "if you want to make the world a better place take a look at yourself and make a change,” so I am going to make some positive changes, not just for me, but so I can better serve the world.

I want to be a better listener, more compassionate and braver, just like the leaders I look up to. If I am a better listener, more people will feel like they have someone to talk to. If I am more compassionate, I will make more time and have more energy to give to people. If I am braver, I will not be afraid to stand up for what is right, no matter it takes. I want to make the world a better place, so I am starting with me!
