Former Students!

by Jenni Kraft

So over the past couple of weeks, I’ve had some wonderful former students contact me! Some were just saying hello and catching up. These are always great! I enjoyed hearing about what they have been involved with recently and what their successes were along with what they were currently working on. Of course some of them have graduated and one of them sent me their graduation invitation and photo in the mail (I love mail). The sweet notes about how I have helped mold them into who they were or helped them to be successful is always a great reminder as to why I’m in this field!

Then I’ve had a couple of students contact me for career advice. One was a student of mine who wanted to learn more about student affairs and how to get into the field. It’s always exciting to inspire the next generation of student affairs professionals. We had a nice long conversation about what it all entails and how to get started. It’s been fun sending him some articles and seeing him get excited about it. Another student called asking for a letter of recommendation. I truly enjoy bragging about my students so of course I was happy to provide one!

From my current institution I have only had a small bunch of those that have left (I’ve only been here a year and a half). I have a couple that keep in touch on Facebook (one is actually working on her masters in student affairs) and even stopped by to say hi when they were in town. I have a good amount who are graduating this year and I can already tell the ones who will come back and see me! I am looking forward to hearing about where they will be in a few years, but for now I have to keep reminding them that they still have two weeks and a FULL semester to focus! It’s our last week of classes and we’re getting everyone ready for finals!
