LJR: FTK and Nearly 30

By Lindsay Ritenbaugh

DemonTHON is DePaul University's largest student-run philanthropic organization benefiting our local Children’s Miracle Network hospital, Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago. Their yearlong fundraising efforts culminate in a 24-hour Dance Marathon, an event where individuals commit to stay on their feet for 24 hours to be in solidarity with families experiencing pediatric illness. Dance Marathons across the country have raised millions of dollars for various Children's Miracle Network hospitals, and in DemonTHON's two years of existence they have raised over $350,000 for Lurie Children's Hospital. In their inaugural year, DemonTHON 2012 broke the national record for highest funds raised by a first-year Dance Marathon (exceeding the previous first-year Dance Marathon by over $40,000)!

As many of you know, I recently moved to Chicago to pursue a career in Student Affairs as the Program Coordinator for Student Organizations. In this role I have the unique opportunity to advise the Morale team, comprised of a director, two assistant directors, and 30 morale captains. These student leaders work tirelessly all year to energize dancers, the overall committee, and most importantly, the Miracle Families. Morale helps to do just that—build morale throughout the 24-hour Dance Marathon and in the many events throughout the year that precede the Big Event.

I admittedly have not yet participated in a dance marathon, but have seen through my previous work with student leaders at The University of Florida how this philanthropic endeavor really can help make miracles happen. I donated as a graduate assistant to Dance Marathon at UF but wanted to have more of an active involvement when I became a full-time professional. I am excited to serve in this volunteer role as advisor to the Morale team and fully participate as a member of DemonTHON 2014! I'll be learning the Morale dance for the top of every hour, standing for those who cannot, and helping to cheer on dancers and committee members for the duration of the Big Event!

For my 30th birthday, which falls shortly after the culmination of DemonTHON 2014's yearlong efforts, I have decided to fundraise solely for DemonTHON in lieu of gifts. In the grand scheme of things, this milestone of mine pales in comparison to those pediatric patients who are fighting for their lives on a daily basis. Please consider donating whatever you can. Donating online is safe and easy! To make an online donation please click the "Support This Participant" button on this page. Any contribution will help, and all donations are tax deductible.

I encourage you to visit my fundraising page! Please take a moment to view the videos and social media links provided there to learn more about DemonTHON at DePaul University and children's hospitals around the nation. I dare you to watch the Katy Perry "Roar" video without tearing up. Please email me at lritenba@depaul.edu if you have any additional questions and I will be happy to answer them for you.
