My Stress Reliever

It took me a while, but I have finally, finally found my graduate school stress reliever.

Last week was one of the most hectic weeks in September for me. I won’t even go into detail about all that happened because  A. I would need to explain all the acronyms and CSU-specific things and B. you all were probably having stressful weeks yourselves (the student affairs struggle is real). Self-care definitely went out the window, and I promised myself that when the week was over, I would do something that I wanted to do. The problem was, I didn’t know what that “something” would be.

That Friday night, as most of my cohort members either socialized with each other or got a head start on readings, I ran to the store to grab ginger, nutmeg, and butter, looked at the ingredients on my kitchen counter, and just started baking. I was determined to bake out my frustration, stress, and feelings from the past week in the form of pumpkin cupcakes with cream cheese.  I could definitely hear my twenty-year-old self in the back of my head, mocking me for my old lady ways. “We used to be such fun EXTROVERTS,” she said. “Go out, meet new people!” I ignored her and made another batch.

It felt strange. It was definitely “out-of-character.” And it was wonderful.

In the past, I have never been one for stress-relievers and hobbies. My idea of a nap used to be watching Netflix for two hours. Coming here to CSU has definitely made me change my perspective of winding down, that’s for sure. But I hadn’t really found my “de-stressor” niche—until now. And though it’s out of character for me to need some time to myself and bake until I’m exhausted, I am enjoying it. And I’m sure my cohort members, friends form back home, and family members will enjoy it to, as they are going to be getting a LOT of baked goods in the mail…
