The Second Year: Creating your Experience

by Katie LaSota

I am currently entering my second year in Residential Life at the College of Saint Benedict. At the end of last year, it occurred to me that I had no idea what new experiences I wanted for the coming year. I spent a lot of time this summer reflecting on my “5 year plan” and where I saw my future in Residential Life and Higher Education. While I did not come to a conclusion about my “5 year plan” I did decided that I wanted to stay in Residential Life in a live in position for my next move. Once I figured that out, I then started to think about the committee/work experience that I wanted this coming year. I really took a look at the experiences that I felt I was lacking and tried to pick committees from there. Once I had an idea of what I wanted, I decided to meet with my supervisor to advocate for the experiences that I wanted to gain during the year. While I knew that I would not get all of the committees that I wanted, it was definitely worth it to me to advocate for myself and the experiences that I wanted to gain. I highly recommend that in your first year, you take note of the areas of your office that you want to get involved in. You are the one that knows what you want to do and where you want to go. Be an active participant in creating your experiences and make sure to communicate what you want/need to your supervisor.
