Dejavu!

So now that I have been here for a little more than a year, I’m starting to experience the opening of school events for the second time! Some repeated task requests, staff training, Campus Activities Board (CAB) retreat planning, and life joining the campus once again! It’s really exciting to be able to think “Yes, I remember that! I can do it!” Not that I would say I couldn’t do it last year… I just have a little more experience with more of the tasks. In fact, I’ve been able to knock off a task that was a mess to complete in October (due to homecoming) and I’m super proud of it! That would be the contracts for summer conferences (I’m not sure why anyone would want to wait until the semester starts to get those taken care of). It’s also nice to be able to hand in a document that you know your boss is going to ask for… before he asks for it! Another great thing about it is that I can recall how things happened last time for events and tasks. And, for the most part, I have notes from myself and others that I can review so I can improve this go around.

I have been taught that the first year is all about learning your role, the second year is to make changes, and the third is the year that you own the position! Well I’m excited to finally be in my second year and after reviewing my last year, I know a few things I will change about myself and the programs. Luckily, I have had a bit of time to review my graduate school information and I am happy to say I will surely be able to apply more theory. Of course this year we have learned that assessment will be more requested from the higher ups (I was ready for it), so now I have more of a reason to share results and do more assessment. For my programs, that will mean starting with learning outcomes first and even getting my students on CAB to start thinking the same way. In working with student organizations I have developed a more structured way for their budget requests. For my leadership programs, I will continue to do my conferences each semester (with some changes of course), but I will also be adding more sessions during the weekdays and during our January Term. Well there are just a few of my highlights for things I am looking forward to this year!

Another interesting thing about the second year is having new staff members. I am no longer the new one and I’m ok with that! Of course I am happy to share with them all the knowledge and experience I have with them. That is both in and outside of work questions! I am enjoying having fresh faces and experiences brought to our team and I know my co-workers are too!

Here’s to a new academic year! I’m excited!
