SoMe and Tech

by Stefanie Lucas

Thursday I listened in to the NASPA webinar “Using Social Media to Leverage Career Development” with Becca Obergefell (@OberBecca) and Mike Severy (@MikeSevery). The webinar was extremely useful, and I would suggest following both of these folks on Twitter. The webinar is part of the NASPA Investing in Our Future webinar series, which is free for undergraduate and graduate members. There are still a few more so you should check out the list here.

Lately I have spent a lot of time reading up on blogging and social media, and I finally feel like I am ready to do more. The webinar was a good inspiration, and I plan to focus on creating a website, creating an page, and engaging more with folks on Twitter. I am leaning towards Wordpress as it was the platform for my graduate portfolio and was pretty easy to use at the time.  I have lots of ideas swirling in my head and need to get them in writing more often!

Here are a few other social media and student affairs tech resources I am following along with lately:

Over the weekend I followed the Twitter backchannel for this years first SA Tech Unconference at Oregon State University. Pretty exciting to see so much good info shared. Check out #SAtechOR to read through Tweets! There are not any near me, but hopefully there is one by you! Check for locations and more information here. I would recommend following one of the founders, Ed Cabellon (@EdCabellon), on Twitter or through his blog for year round innovative ideas and tips.

NASPA Tech KC Blog

Check out the new blog by the NASPA Technology Knowledge Community. Great resources, and especially good for folks new to technology with content focused on open source secrets, tips, training and education, policy, and highlights of new professionals.

Higher Ed Live and Student Affairs Live

A weekly web show focused on the emerging role of social media and digital media in higher education. Great to watch Student Affairs Life on Wednesday at noon EST. Check out past shows here.
