Making Adult Decisions

by Katie LaSota

This year has been full of new challenges, surprises and transitions. While I expected that starting a new job would come with all of these things, I forgot about all of the new “grown up” decisions that I would have to make or even have the ability to make. Over this last week I started looking at buying a new car. Luckily, I have a friend who works at a dealership and I was able to test drive and look at vehicles for about four hours. During that time I found two cars that I really liked and could see myself driving. I finally decided on a 2012 Chevy Malibu that drives like a dream. During this experience I was able to access my father’s knowledge and wisdom. We then started to talk about the whole process of financing and insurance. Without his knowledge, I would not have been able to get as good of a deal. This process of making this decision with my father got me thinking about how important elders and our parents can be in any and all life choices we make. Without my father and his experiences that he learned from past mistakes, I would not have had such success in finding a new vehicle. I feel very fortunate to be in a place where I can afford to purchase a car and am even more grateful to have family that is willing to help me make adult decisions. In some cases, parenting really never ends… Sorry dad!

If this is the type of relationship that you have with your parents or family, do you ever really stop consulting your parents or family?

I have to give a shout out to State Farm and how great they were through this whole process!
