What motivates us to lead? Part II

Fellow SAFirstYears blogger Ryan Bye and I recently discussed what we wanted to write about, and thanks to some inspiration in his class we decided on what motivates us as leaders.

For me, the specifics of this changes each day. But each day as I reflect on the day, I realized that the overarching theme of what motivates me are the stories and growth of those around me.

I was once told people show love in different ways. I think this can also apply somewhat in our jobs. People show growth and development in different ways as well. While it may be through hugs, smiles, thank you’ s, deep conversations, constructive criticisms, frustration, taking on extra work, or processing through a tough incident, the students around us are developing and growing whether we realize each day or not. This is what motivates me. Once I sit with a student and reflect on their growth, I hope that I am able to be a part of it, even if it's just a little bit. Because then I'm growing as a professional. And that growth for each person involved is what motivates me.

What motivates you?
