What is leadership?

This semester I am in a Leadership in Higher Education course so I have a feeling that a lot of my posts will probably relate to that class. Leadership just feels like something that is too hard to talk about… Something that just is, but here I am ready to learn some theories associated behind it. I hope that through this class I will change my perspective (I don’t imagine I will have too much of a choice) and I look forward to being challenged.

Last night in class we did a little activity that I would love for you all to do too. It was called “I believe” and we essentially needed to write what we believe leadership to be. Our prompt was this quote, ““The point is not to become a leader.  The point is to become yourself,
and to use yourself completely – all your gifts, skills and energies – to make your vision manifest.  You must withhold nothing.  You must, in sum, become the person you started out to be, and to enjoy the process of becoming.”  (Warren Bennis, On Becoming a Leader).

So, what is leadership to you? Please share with me @ByeByeRyan

In peace,

Ryan Bye

  1. This is what I wrote in class: Leadership embodies having confidence in the ability to create progress. It is learning to confront the uncomfortable with some ounce of hope. Leadership is empowering those around you to explore a path of self-discovery.
