More to Celebrate

On January 23, 2012 I launched this blog. But this date is of more significance for me. This is also the date that tornadoes moved across Alabama and in particular my hometown.

That morning excited about the launch of this blog, having prepared the first submissions, and tweeted about the launch I had sweet dreams of nothing the night before. Around 6:00 a.m. in the morning I received a call from my mother saying that the house had been struck by a tornado but that she was alright. There was immediate concern for her safety, but when you’re close to 1,000 miles away in South Bend, IN there’s little you can do but be of support and access the resources you have at your hands.

One of the first things I did after this news was log on to facebook where I then was able to see the added scope of the damage to the area. Friends posted of damage to their homes. Many used social media just to let others that they were ok or at least safe.

I went into work and alerted my supervisors with what was happening at home. What I did not expect from my colleagues was the humble and caring response to what was happening within my family. When fellow professionals and friends in the field caught wind of the damage, there were many warm feelings that poured in via phone calls, social media messages, and texts. I was instantly reminded that student affairs is a field where its members care deeply about each other. Those feelings of genuine concern for the well being of others doesn’t simply transpire to our students in which we were inspired to join this field, but also to each other.

One year later and after several visits home, the monster that had ripped through neighborhoods still lingered in memories from its survivors and subtle reminders everywhere. I have so much love to everyone who was there at a time that was very personal. One year later in addition to this blog launch, I celebrate that all my family members were spared on that day. I am also very thankful for all of you in the student affairs world and for all your wonderful support!
