How Do I know I Fit the Job Qualifications?

The job search can be a very stressful time for anyone, let alone a 2nd year grad student.  In the beginning of my search I struggled figuring out my skill set until I was introduced to three buddies; green, yellow and red highlighters.  No, I am not crazy! Yes, you heard me correctly. When reading over each job description I used the green highlighter to highlight my strengths, yellow to highlight the job duties I could do and red to highlight experiences I didn’t have. I was shocked at my findings. The jobs I thought I liked just by reading them were not the best fit for me due to lack of experience; where as the ones I overlooked were the best fit based on my skill set. I started to utilize this technique to help me narrow down jobs and before I knew it I had my first interview scheduled for TPE! My best advice is to take the time to analyze where your strengths lie with in the position and go from there.

“The keys to patience are acceptance and faith. Accept things as they are, and look realistically at the world around you. Have faith in yourself and in the direction you have chosen” –Ralph Marston-

Good luck!
