Searching for Something More…

When starting a new job not only do you have a lack of knowledge about your new position, but you may also have the challenge of moving to a new community. This is the second time that I have moved to a new area and have had to create a new identity for myself in the community. The first move I made was to graduate school, this was the hardest move because I had never lived away from my family. Now that I have moved back to Minnesota and closer to my family, I am still trying to build relationships and become acquainted with the community. When I moved back, I knew that I was going to need to find an activity to make friends and to create some sort of balance. I did not want to spend all of my time working and this was a way that I could ensure some space between the campus and myself.

Before I moved back to Minnesota, I somehow discovered roller derby and decided that it was something that I would be interested in. I finally went to a training meeting, which turned into a practice, last week. It was an uncomfortable experience because I had not skated since middle school and did not know anyone on the team. Since then, I have gotten to attend another practice and I am really enjoying it. Having this hobby has made me realize how important it is to be active and involved in things other than work.

Therefore, I recommend that you take chances and get involved in your community.

  2. This is so funny to me, because I clicked to open the post based on the first sentence, but I've actually been playing roller derby since I graduated with my bachelor's. When I moved to grad school, I had to adjust to a new team. Now that I've moved back closer to home, I'm still too far from my original team, so I'm again adjusting to a new set of derby teammates (although I was already friends with many of these girls and boys... I skate coed). I'd love to keep in touch about your adventures in both derby and student affairs!

  3. I am sorry for not seeing your post earlier! I am loving roller derby and have been having a lot of fun a practice, even though it is sometimes scary.
