So Austin College is a little bit different than any other college I’ve been to… this week’s reason is that we started our classes last Tuesday instead of the week prior (like most other colleges). Well before we officially started our classes, we closed the freshmen/transfer orientation program with (from my perspective) a neat convocation that involved caps and gowns! In the picture below we have our speaker presenting a welcome to the freshmen class of 2016 on the left (you can kind of see their banner) and the senior class of 2013 on the Right!
We addressed the seniors, who are dressed in their graduation gowns, reminding them to stay focused on their goals both personal and academic. Then we addressed the incoming class in a way that let them know that the day they arrive in caps and gowns will be soon if they persevere. I thought this was such a neat way to inspire the freshmen as they begin their journey!

I was so impressed by the maturity of this celebration and really appreciated being a part of it. My fellow new staff member and I saluted the class from the back of the room and began pondering about our future “Senior Salutes” when we would know and have helped developed more of the students. I am very much looking forward to seeing more of this tradition in the future! Till next week, cheers!
