Welcome Back

Yes, I was counting down the days until the students returned to campus. Yes, I was excited for them to be back. Yes, I was ready to take 2012-2013 by the horns. However, I was a mess on the first day of classes as I prepared for my department’s biggest event of the year: The Welcome Back BBQ.

As my day started at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, I realized that my students had snuck up on me when some returned to campus the week before and stopped through to visit me. I was so busy with our multicultural student orientation that I forgot about my countdown. Students were on campus and they were ready to get this year started. Come Monday, I was already missing my slow summer days (isn’t that what always happens).

3 meetings, and about 4 student drop-in visits later…I kicked my butt into gear to get ready for our big event. I saw that some of our canopy tents hadn’t arrived at 1 p.m. like scheduled, and so I had a small moment of panic. I called the company we were getting our tents from and they were on their way. The DJ arrived. Catering was setting up. The weather was a gorgeous 78 degrees and sunny. Things were pulling together quite nicely. So why was I so worried about all of it? It’s because I’m a worry wart.

At 5 p.m. the students began to pour in, grab their burgers and find someplace to sit with their friends. We had a lot of our new Panthers show up! Freshmen were certainly dominating this event (which in comparison, last year we had a nice crowd of Seniors). It’s a great introduction for all of our students, in particular our multicultural students, to our office. After a few of the group dances including: the “Wobble”, the “Cupid Shuffle”, and the “Jerk”, I realized how old I’m getting. My students were cheering me on, though!

By the look of the photos that were taken that day, students seemed to have a great time celebrating with each other! Logistically, it was perfect. I couldn’t have asked for a better day. I hope the students enjoyed themselves and from face-to-face comments, and those on Facebook – everything was positively received.

Hope your first day of classes went great!
