Is a Ph.D. for me?

Friends, family, and colleagues have all asked me if I’m going to pursue a Ph.D. in the future. And the answer is, and always has been, I have no idea. It seems like a good idea in theory, but then I get nervous and scared at the thought. I often wonder if it would enhance my career by pursuing a doctoral degree. Of all the financial aid administrators I know, only a few have Ph.Ds. The majority of us hold a master’s degree, which I already have. So, I wonder, is it really necessary? There isn’t a right or wrong answer to this question, but it is something I have been struggling with for a while.

Another thought I often have is changing my career path completely. I’m young and flexible; it is something that wouldn’t be too difficult. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love my current job and working in financial aid but I also have another strong interest: law. I have always been intrigued with law and the idea of justice. I have often considered law school. My friends tell me I would make a great lawyer, but I wonder if it is something that would truly make me happy. If I were to choose this path, I would want to work at a college or university and serve as legal counsel. I would definitely want to stay within the college or university system.

There are so many choices to make in life and this is just one of them. It is not a choice I need to make right now but it is something I ponder often. I’m in love with my professional life and wouldn’t trade it for the world. Obtaining my master’s degree has opened so many doors and opportunities. I would only imagine my world would dramatically change with more education.
