1 Year Semester at Sea Anniversary!!!

Wow!!! I’m seeing it all over Facebook: everyone from the Summer 2011 Semester at Sea voyage is reminiscing on our adventures on our unforgettable journey last summer! If you are not familiar with Semester at Sea, it is a university on a ship that offers students from all majors a chance to study abroad by visiting 7+ countries in one semester. It is surreal to think that this time last year I was in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean learning about International Higher Education and living the life with my incredible new friends and co-workers on a SHIP!!!

The hardest thing about believing that it was all real is that I had always worked and paid for everything I have wanted since high school. This was a big goal for me and, even though I wasn’t sure how I was going to do it, I surely worked hard to make it happen! When I got accepted and received a staff/internship position on the ship I could not believe it, yet I was so thrilled to have the opportunity!

I had counted down to the day I would be leaving for the Bahamas for over 100 days and when the day came and I woke up in my hotel with these new friends at (6 am mind you), I still felt like I was in a dream. Strangely enough, it still seems like it was a dream as I think about all the wonderful things we got to experience! We not only took really interesting classes from incredible professors… but we also got to visit 10 different countries in the Mediterranean (2 were small trips within other countries) and experience so many cultures INCLUDING the many cultures of the USA on the ship itself! Oh and as a staff member, we had some incredible students to work with!!!

I have put it on my list of things to do (again) in the future! I’m not sure what role I will play on the ship next: Residence Director, Lifelong Learner Coordinator, Field Office Coordinator, Assistant Dean of Students, the Dean of Students, regular Lifelong Learner, or even Faculty. I don’t know when or in what form. All I know is that I will return and I can’t wait!

And when I do, I surely will have another countdown! Let me know if you want to join me!!!!

  1. I was just on the ship last week and it was so amazing to be back: the smell, being rocked to sleep, the nice crew, the "bing bong" intercom...it felt great to be back! Will you be going on the 2013 Reunion Voyage in early January?
