Collaborate and Listen

This past weekend I attended a roller derby bout and had a blast! The team in my community is called the Lafayette Brawlin’ Dolls and they are an amazing group of women. Not only was it great seeing a dear friend do an amazing job but I feel like it helped me gain perspective on the value of teamwork. The girls on the team work together to achieve two common goals: to win and have fun. After reflecting on this experience, I felt so empowered and do really feel that we do need each other in order to reach our goals. I’m sure many of us would not be in the positions we are in today without the use of other people. In graduate school, my cohort often leaned on one another for support. I know without that awesome group of people that experience would have been much more difficult and not as enjoyable. I needed the team during this time in order to survive the storm. I’m sure we all can think of multiple examples of teamwork in our work and personal lives.

In my day-to-day work, I often rely on the support of my coworkers in order to be the best I can be at my job. I spend half of my week working at the front counter serving students but also helping my co-workers and student assistants. We have high traffic and need to trust each other to work independently but also together to make it run smoothly. We all get along very well and share a common goal. Much like the roller derby team, we are a strong group of women who do an amazing and efficient job.

I also feel like I have a strong support system in my personal life, which helps me focus on my career and life goals. I need a team of family and friends in order to have a fulfilling and beautiful life. I rely heavily on my friends for support and couldn’t be more grateful for the people in my life.

Something I learned in graduate school is that group and teamwork will always be apart of our jobs. Sometimes it may be frustrating process, but at the end of the day we all need each other in order to be more successful. I want to send a big THANK YOU to my team!
