Soak Up the Sun

I can’t remember when the last time I thought about going on a vacation was. Of course, I say it out loud when time seems to slip through my fingers and I have too much to do. However, with the students off on Spring Break this week, I can’t help but feel jealous that my students are having a blast on some beach and working on their tans.

I was never the kind of student who was excited about the festivities of Spring Break. I either caught up on sleep, or had an opportunity to work, or did homework in advance. It’s not like I had the money to travel to far-off places, or had the ability to go home. While my parents were enjoying time without me in Texas, I was “living it up” in the cornfields of Iowa – which is an adventure in itself. Don’t get me wrong, Iowa is not a boring place like so many think. I was just a boring person.

Now as a professional, I’m still in the same situation. Most of my income goes towards those lovely student loan payments and bills, so saving money has been difficult. Not just that, but I’m still that boring person I was a few years ago. My idea of bliss these days is peace and quiet to catch up on reports I haven’t done because I’m too busy in meetings. Not having interruptions from students in my office has been enjoyable. Don’t get me wrong, I still miss them! I just like when the day slows down a little so I can focus on items on my to-do list.

When I start thinking about how work has been my main focus this past year, I realize I need to do more fun things to have some balance. I have always been so focused on being professional that it’s all I know how to do now. I have forgotten to have fun. How does one do that?! It’s like that moment when you realize that Santa Claus isn’t real…that the magic is gone. Silly, I know, but true.

So as I look through facebook this week, and see my students posting pictures of their fun destinations, I close my eyes and imagine that one of these days that person will be me. I’m going to take time to relax and not have a worry in the world. Yes, I know it seems weird for one to live vicariously through their students. However, at times the students will teach us a thing or two about life.

What was your most memorable Spring Break trip? Ideas on fun vacation destinations?
